Do you still remember earlier when I told you that you couldn’t tell what kind of disaster will strike and when it will come? Add to that the fact that you also couldn’t tell how it will affect you and your family. In some cases, it is best to hole yourself in your home and wait for the worst to pass, but there are times when you have to leave your home and head out into the wilderness. In case the latter does happen, you need to know the basics when it comes to bushcraft if you want to even have a chance at survival.

Fire craft

Most preppers will always have a lighter on them wherever they go, regardless if they are smokers or not, so they can make a fire whenever they need to. However, you should not rely on these modern implements too much and learn the primitive ways of making a fire, like the hand drill, using a flint, or creating a makeshift lens to harness the power of the sun.

Before you can start learning about the primitive ways to start a fire, you need to know how to build one. First, besides the fire making tool, you will need to prepare your tinder, kindling, and the actual firewood. You can make tinder out of any light and dry materials, or you can make some by running the edge of your knife along the side of some nice dry softwood. You can also take some dried leaves and then scrunch them up a bit to release the fibers inside.

Once you have tinder, you can start gathering kindling. These are just some small dried twigs, leaves, or anything else that will easily catch fire. The purpose of the kindling is to nurse the small flame created using the tinder into something large enough to make the firewood burn. Once the fire is large enough, you can slowly start adding larger pieces of firewood into the flames.

Using a primitive hand drill

There are many primitive methods for making fire, but we will be focusing on the very basic hand drill. The first thing you need to do is find a straight stick, preferably something from a softwood variety, and then round off one end.

The next thing you will need is softwood fireboard. Look for a flat piece of dried wood and then cut a small hole, just big enough for the stick to fit. Then make a V-shaped notch at the edge of the fireboard, the point of the V should connect to the small hole you made earlier.

To use the hand drill, fill the v-shaped notch with some tinder and then place the stick inside the hole. Place both of your hands along the drill and then rub them back and forth to spin it. To provide more friction, press down on the drill while spinning it. Continue until you create a substantial amount of smoke and a small ember forms in the tinder.
